AEK Athens ride out pandemic crisis with help from TransferRoom

AEK Athens sealed a deal within one month of joining TransferRoom. And the ability to do business quickly was vital at a time when the Covid-19 pandemic is putting pressure on club finances.

Player sale eases short-term cash flow problem

TransferRoom was crucial to AEK being able to raise money swiftly by helping the club to sell defender Marios Ikononmou to FC Copenhagen quickly and easily.

Ex-General Manager Minas Lysandrou said: “Like many other clubs, AEK Athens had cash-flow problems due to Covid-19, and we were looking to sell players to gain some income. On TransferRoom, we learned that FC Copenhagen were looking for a centre back.”

“We pitched them our player Ikonomou through the platform, and initiated negotiations directly with FC Copenhagen shortly after pitching Marios on TransferRoom. Selling him was really important to the club’s finances.”

After relief from short-term pain, time for long-term gain

The deal for Ikonomou, a Greek international, helped AEK weather the current storm. Now the club is looking forward to using TransferRoom to arrange transfers and build networks that can help create an exciting future for the club.

Lysandrou said: “We had only used TransferRoom for about a month when we sold our first player using the system, and we expect to do both incoming and outgoing transfers with the platform in the future. Having information about the market's needs is a big help for AEK Athens.
